When an Apple co-founder goes for Android over iPhone 01/21/2012
0 Comments

Steve Wozniak, cofounder of Apple inc. says he loves iPhone, he loves the beauty of it, but he wishes his iPhone could do what his Android does for him. Many are not aware and wouldn't know that Woz was among the first non Googlers to have received a Galaxy nexus. Steve Wozniak is one of those people who love gadgets. He has a number of good cell phones. He gets it as soon as they are launched. When he compares iPhone and its Android counterpart, he has several things to say about the latter. He finds the Android voice calling app to be superior than Siri.

He doesn't ignore the fact that iPhone earns the points on user experience is not as complex as an Android phone is. He has particularly targeted Siri this time which isn't responding to his questions. Internet surfing was an area most emphasized while Siri came to forefront. Well to say the least, iPhone4S is lagging behind in terms of internet surfing via voice, all credits to Siri. Woz went on to say that iPhone is for those who are scared of technology and there is nothing bad to be afraid of technology.

Life is a Facebook, "share, tag, and like" 01/20/2012

Life is what you make of it. Well the mantra today is Facebook is what you do with it. What we do in our lives is perhaps in lines with what we do on Facebook. Take for instance, I bought a new car, I would take pictures and would spread the word verbally. A kind of similar thing is what I do on Facebook. I take pictures, upload them and then spread the word in the form of a "status update". When I say I am uploading the pics in technical terms, I am sharing a picture on Facebook. Now if I so care as to let everybody know about it, I would send the pictures along with the word of mouth. Well on Facebook I start tagging people in my pics, so as to let everybody know about it.

A sense of appreciation is what comes naturally to you. This is one thing I would do, but scarcely in real life. Facebook gives me ample opportunities to cover up for all. Quite simple, I hit the like button. Sometimes I do not even bother to look at it, but it seems to be making people happy around me. Facebook is all about such stuff. People finding a new life in virtual world, contented with the likes and requests.

The day Wikipedia went black 01/19/2012

Wikipedia.org went black on wednesday to protest against SOPA(Stop online piracy act). The name SOPA tells us and draws the boundaries as to what is ethically right or wrong. In actual realization, SOPA is a conflict in itself. Moreover the debate is on the right to freedom of speech. The openness of internet is what attracts most people and if SOPA is to take that away, it would require infrastructural changes on a vast scale. Wikipedia along with many other big names are standing against SOPA, which was proposed by the Congress some time back.

Wikipedia is the encyclopedia over the internet and its one of the most visited websites in the world. Wikipedia took the right step to make people aware of what are the demerits associated with he implementation of SOPA. SOPA will forever change the way we see the internet today.

Drift from signup using email to signup using Facebook 01/14/2012

I just feel Facebook hasn't seen its best days yet. A marked change was observed when cell phone was made the primary mode of communication since a time came when everybody on Earth had a personal cell phone. Well I am talking about another drift from signup using email to sign up using Facebook. These days every social networking startup asks user to sign up using Facebook.

It is taken for granted that you have a Facebook account. The popularity of Facebook has just let everybody stand in awe. Though Facebook does not offer primary email accounts, the websites asking for signup via Facebook goes on to prove how badly is Facebook needed to market one's product. When a user signs up using Facebook credentials, he is required to give rights to the website to post content on user's wall. Nothing better than Facebook when you are looking to popularize your content. With the sponsored advertisements coming in picture, its making things easier for the startups day by day.

Facebook is balancing just the right way between what pleases the users and what pleases the advertisers. We just hope Facebook has more to offer in time to come.

SOPA scanner will bypass websites with .org or .com domains 01/12/2012

Did you know that all the struggle the congressmen have had with the commencement of SOPA was for nothing? The actual implementation of SOPA does not cover websites which come under .com or .org domains.

Torrent is the best cited example of piracy, while btjunkie.org, thepiratebay.org are well immune to SOPA considering the .org domain they fall under. The exemption of such websites leaves the act with some loose ends. This is like making the things work under obligation. If there are restrictions for one website, the same should apply for others too.

Some people have also raised their concerns regarding the freedom of speech, SOPA will hinder. There are many big names which are already against the implementation of SOPA, and with such provisions one cannot hope SOPA to be be even half as effective as it was thought of during its inception.

Role of Social networking websites in making a brand 01/09/2012
0 Comments

Social networking websites have become a necessity not only for individuals but also for organizations. A social bookmark is a key to making a brand name. Analysts say that you can miss out on some technical aspects of a website but can't miss on channelizing it through social media. Facebook paved a way by allowing users to create their own page to promote the brand. Google+ followed the footsteps and it also has a feature where one can create a promotion page.

With the advent of social networking websites, it has become a lot easier for the startups to build their name in no time. Other popular websites such as Twitter, social bookmark Delicious, Stumble Upon are other free channels to make one's content popular over the internet. There is a paid version of advertising too where one chooses to have a specific set of target audience. Facebook allows you to fix a budget own your own and then customize as to what audience one wants to target and at what hours of the day should the advertisement appear.

The idea is, if a person sees one thing continuously being displayed every single time he lands on his home page, there is a possibility that he would want to know about it.

How SOPA will change things we see over the internet ? 01/07/2012

There is a strong ongoing debate as to judge the after effects of the implementation of Stop online piracy act. The internet we surf today is full of frivolous content used by websites not authorized to use it. Some websites have built their basis on user inputs and people love to share content because they think its free for everyone. If the actual implementation of SOPA is realized, then even the big names such as YouTube, Facebook may well fall under the scanner as a lot of user generated content is being displayed through both the websites. Many are not even aware of what the online property theft is. SOPA may lead to closure of innumerable websites.

Some big names which are standing in support of SOPA are Sony BMG, Warner Music group, Pfizer, Universal music, ESPN, Pearson publications, McGraw-hill education. These were some big names
among the 124 listed organizations. There are some organizations which stood in support of SOPA but later withdrew due to clashes with other big names. GoDaddy was in news for a while when it renewed its statement from "no longer supports SOPA legislation" to "GoDaddy opposes SOPA".

The argument that SOPA poses threat to freedom of speech through digital media is well received by people from different walks. Even the open source concept may fade away since there are many projects aiding online piracy and may well shutdown as an after effect. Organizations like Google,Facebook,Yahoo,AOL,Twitter have strongly put their arguments against the implementation of SOPA. If SOPA is to be implemented then it would surely hinder people from sharing and socializing. The content over the internet would then lie vulnerable and people would be skeptical as to what lies within the confines of the act.

Unwarranted updates and videos on Facebook 01/06/2012
0 Comments

It has been observed of late that some videos are being triggered automatically from the Facebook profile of its users. This has been an issue well hyped but hasn't been addressed till date. Analysts say its a malware which infects Windows executables even if accidently clicked.

Win32/Ramnit is the one in question which was responsible for the hacking of 45K accounts in Europe yesterday. The virus spreads from desktop to desktop once clicked. This isn't the first time Facebook has been in news over security concerns. Last month some 40K Facebook profiles were hacked from one of the servers and people had to commit social suicide by deleting their Facebook accounts.

The stature Facebook holds keeps it unavoidable in daily life, but if such issues linger around for some more time, then it might give Google+ a chance to prove its worth.

How to install Django framework on Ubuntu ? 01/03/2012
1 Comment

Django is a web framework used with programming language Python. We build one application myApp1 from the scratch, build another application myApp2 and realize both use something in common and we associate the code in such a way that the application 1 uses the code of application 2 and vice versa. Well, this is is how Django works. A fine level of abstraction in Django eliminates some tedious processes like configuring a webserver or importing the archives. For installing Django on Ubuntu, here is the stepwise process :-

1. Go to the url https://www.djangoproject.com/download/. Download the latest official version.

2. Once the tar is downloaded. Extract it from the terminal by typing :
tar xzvf Django-1.3.1.tar.gz

The version of the downloaded framework may be different. One needs to change the version in the above mentioned commands accordingly.

3. Next we move to the Django directory by typing cd Django-1.3.1

4. We need root access to install django, so we use the sudo command sudo python setup.py install

5. Nextly we setup  a project to check if Django is properly installed or not.

6. Navigate to the home directory through the terminal. Make a directory say example over there.

7. Now navigate to the directory named example.

8. We type django-admin startproject abc, where abc is the name of project we want to create.

9. A directory named abc is created inside example which is created by Django.

10. Browse to the created directory abc.

11. Next start the webserver by typing  python manage.py runserver on terminal to see if django is working or not.
